Join a trusted domain and verify that the Domain Admins group is in the local Administrators group.
Pre-configure the firewall for use with LANDesk by running this package: FWcfg.exe
Install the LANDesk agent by running this package: LANDeskAgent_with_status.exe
LANDesk gives the service providers the ability to remotely scan for and remove spyware. We can also install Service Pack 2 (SP2) for you. This installation can be rolled back if it fails to install properly. LANDesk has the ability to keep your machine up to date with the latest security and application patches.
Install and update anti-malware software. Spybot Search & Destroy (ftp://topaz.msu.montana.edu/Other-software/Security/spybotsd14.exe) and Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) are both free. Ad-Aware SE Plus is available through the ITC computer store. Contact your department’s service provider for other anti-malware programs they support. Scan for malware and remove any these find. Install and update antivirus software
IMPORTANT: Uninstall old anti-virus before installing a new one.
If you are using McAfee that you installed from the software server, make sure it is
version 8.5.0 NOT version 4.51 (this was an older version for Windows 98). Scan for and remove viruses
Update all the drivers to the latest revision including the BIOS. See your computer manufacturer’s web site for downloads.
Create a restore point. The XP SP2 installer does this for you automatically, but do it by hand just in case.
Go to the Windows Update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to install SP2. To get there, open Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu, and select Windows Update.
