Run only the services you need
- Disable any service that you are not using (FTP, HTTP, TELNET, NETBIOS, BROWSER, SMTP)
- File and Print Sharing, use a dedicated file and print server when possible
- Disable File and Print Sharing if you don't need it
- Don't share your entire drive restrict it to a directory
- Disable guest access
- Change the permissions from everyone full control
- Assign rights to groups not users when possible
- Update your software to prevent DOS attacks
- Restrict access by IP address or time of day
- Run port mapping or port monitoring software to detect intrusions
- Insure you have the latest updates if you are hosting a website
- Check all CGI scripting to be sure it is "sanitized"
- Restrict access to directories by not allowing browsing
- Allow execute access in only secured areas
