EDUCATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR
RESEARCHERS USING HUMAN SUBJECTS
AT MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY

(updated 3/4/08)

The MSU Institutional Review Board follows the policy required of National Institutes of Health grantees concerning education and instruction in the ethical conduct of human research and the protection of human subjects. Before a research proposal can be approved, the Institutional Review Board must receive documentation (copy of certificate of completion) that all investigators involved in the proposed research have received such education and instruction.  This also holds true for Exempt proposals.

The Board recommends the on-line instruction program of the National Cancer Institute as a source of education concerning human research. After completing this on-line program entitled Human Participant Protections, Education for Research Teams, the investigator can print a certificate which the Institutional Review Board will accept as documentation of the required instruction. A copy of this certificate for each investigator should be submitted with the application for normal or expedited review of a research proposal. It is not required if the research is exempt from the requirement of Institutional Review Board review.

The Board will also accept documentation of instruction and education from other sources, provided that the material covered equals or exceeds that provided by the above site. The Board also reserves the right to require additional education and instruction of investigators who are conducting human research associated with unusually complex ethical issues.
