Antivirus Software Available at no charge to Departments

MSU-Bozeman, through central funding by the University, provides anti-virus software for University owned computers running the Windows, Linux, or Macintosh operating systems.  For those that did not know however, all you need is a domain login account to gain access to it.  If you do not have one or don’t know if you do, you can call or email the Helpdesk (1777 or helpdesk@montana.edu).

The only other requirement is that you must agree to only install McAfee on a computer owned by MSU-Bozeman.  If you have problems with downloading it, such as authentication problems or download speeds too slow (dial-up), a CD can be checked out from the ITC Computer Store located in room 68, of the Renne Library basement South entrance.  Be sure to read the following directions in full before proceeding with the installation.

IMPORTANT: You will need to uninstall any other antivirus programs and reboot your system before installing this package.  If you do not, you can experience crashes, slowness, MS Office not working properly, etc.  Do this after downloading files & scanning/removing spyware.

Before installing this on a Windows system, it would be a good idea to install and run some sort of anti-spyware programs.  Spybot Search & Destroy (ftp://topaz.msu.montana.edu/Other-software/Security/spybotsd14.exe) and Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) are both free.  Windows Defender, although very stable, is still in beta form, and therefore may encounter/cause problems with some software.  Ad-Aware SE Plus is available through the ITC computer store.  Remove any spyware or malware these find and McAfee should install just fine.
