Free McAfee Antivirus

Many of you may already know that currently enrolled MSU-Bozeman Students are provided one license for McAfee Antivirus software that they may install on a computer owned or used by the student. This license is valid for one year, as long as the student is currently enrolled at MSU-Bozeman. You may access the software through your MSU domain login account. If you do not have one or don’t know if you do, you can call or email the Helpdesk (1777 or helpdesk@montana.edu).

If you are unable to download the software a CD can be checked out from the ITC Computer Store located in room 68, of the Renne Library basement South entrance. You will need to present your student ID in order to be able to check out the CD. Be sure to read the following directions in full before proceeding with the installation.

IMPORTANT: You will need to uninstall any other antivirus programs and reboot your system before installing this package. If you do not, you can experience crashes, slowness, MS Office not working properly, etc. Do this after downloading files & scanning/removing spyware.

Before installing this on a Windows system, it would be a good idea to install and run some sort of anti-spyware programs. Spybot Search & Destroy (ftp://topaz.msu.montana.edu/Other-software/Security/spybotsd14.exe), Ad-Aware SE Personal (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3405-8022-5153545.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5) and Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) are all free. Windows Defender, although very stable, is still in beta form, and therefore may encounter/cause problems with some software. Remove any spyware or malware these find and McAfee should install just fine.

To download your free copy of McAfee, go to the following link:

• This will bring up a box prompting you for your domain username and password.
• If you logged in successfully, you will be taken to the McAfee download page. If you are having trouble logging in, you can call/email the Helpdesk for assistance.

Note: There is a link to instructions for installing McAfee in the middle of the page. You may want to print out the set that pertains to your system.

• Select the Operating System you are installing it on (the page displays what you are running above the three radio buttons), and check the box next to “I agree to the terms on this page.”
• Then you can click on the “Download McAfee” button. It should bring up a dialogue box prompting you to run or save the file.
• Click on save, noting where you saved it to.
