McAfee NetShield for NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Installation

The ideal method for installing the McAfee software is to have a CD or be able to map directly to the share on the server. If  the only way you can get the software is from a zip file, you will want to copy the zip file to a temporary directory such as C:\TEMP and extract the files into that temporary directory before you run the Setup program. The ZIP file is  NNT450LEN.ZIP or NNT450LEN.EXE in the case of the self extracting executable.

Once you have connected to a source for the software you will then run the setup.exe file to install the software. Once the software is installed you will want to configure it. You will then want to set it up for automatic scheduled updates and get the latest DAT file available.

After the Windows Installer Dialog Box closes you will get a screen with the product information. Press Next to continue or cancel to run the setup program another time.
Answer Yes to the Software License Agreement. You will need to buy a new license in two years.
Choose the Custom Installation option. Then click Next to continue.
Click on the icon next to Alert Manger and select "Run all from my computer". Then click Next to continue.
Insure both items are checked. Then click Next.
Be sure the User Name you select has full Administrator rights. Then click Next.
Click Install to continue.
Uncheck both of these and click on Next to continue.
Click on No to continue with the Service Pack Update and the new SDAT.
Click on Start then Run and enter the text at the right then Press OK to run the Service Pack update.
Click on Next to install the Service Pack.
Select No, I will restart my computer later then click on Finish to continue on to the SDAT update.
Click on Start then Run and enter the text on the right to go to the directory containing the latest sdatXXXX.exe file to update your scan engine and DAT files.
Click on Next to begin the SDAT update.
Click on Finish and restart your PC to complete the installation.
Once the software is installed you will want to configure it with your personal preferences. To get this window right click on the Virus Scan NT icon in the system tray and select Properties .
Under What to Scan Program files only is generally all you will need unless you suspect a new type of virus. The All Files choice takes a lot longer to scan your hard drive.
For better protection you can add Find unknown program viruses to the Heuristics section.
Clean infected files automatically is generally the best choice.
You can change what information is logged.
Add any folders you want to exclude from scanning.
Next you will want to set up automatic scheduling for updates and upgrades. Go to Start Programs then Network Associates NetShield then choose McAfee NetShield Console. You will get the following window.
Double Click on Automatic DAT Update.
The transfer method of FTP from a remote network computer is there by default and requires you to modify the FTP computer name and directory as shown on the right.
If you want to get automatic updates check the Enable scheduler box and set the update to weekly at a time the PC will be on. Then click OK. Then press the Update now button.
You will get the following dialog box giving you the status of your update.
After it finds the update file on the remote server it will change to this dialog box.
If you already have the latest DAT file you will get this message. Otherwise you will get a message that it was completed successfully. Press OK to close the box.
Check the Enable scheduler box and choose Monthly from Run and enter a time your PC will be on in the Start at area. Congratulations you have installed and configured your Anti-Virus package.
To verify that you have the latest versions right click on the shield icon in the task bar and verify that you have the most up to date versions.
