McAfee VShield version 4.51 SP1 setup instructions.

The ideal method for installing the McAfee software is to have a CD or be able to map directly to the share on the server. If  the only way you can get the software is from a zip file, you will want to copy the zip file to a temporary directory such as C:\TEMP and extract the files into that temporary directory before you run the Setup program. The ZIP file is VSCI451L.ZIP for the Windows 9X, Windows ME, NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP  version or VSCI451L.EXE in the case of a self extracting executable. You should uninstall any previous versions of VirusScan before you install version 4.51. NOTE TO NT USERS: (Do not attempt to install VirusScan 451. over an existing NetShield installation. Remove NetShield BEFORE you install VirusScan)

Once you have connected to a source for the software you will then run the setup.exe file to install the software. Once the software is installed you will want to configure it. Then you will want to set it up for automatic scheduled updates. Please note that these screen captures were done using a Windows 2000 Professional  based PC. Your dialog boxes may differ with other operating systems.

Click Start Run and enter the text at the right in the Open box double then press OK. Double click on the setup.exe file.

Version 1.1 of Windows installer is verified as being installed or is installed at this time requiring a reboot.

Read the product information then click Next. You will need to buy a new license in two years.

Select  I agree to the terms of the License Agreement and click Next.
If you are installing to NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, you will see this dialog box. Select "Use Standard Security" unless this will be used in an open laboratory or multiple user environment.
Select Typical Installation. This is new to this release where it installs all of the common options. The only options missing are "Mirror Task", "Screen Scan", and the "Emergency Disk Utility".

Press Next to continue.

Click Install to begin the installation.
Wait until the Next windows appears to continue.

Uncheck  Run Default Scan after installation. Then click Next.

Check Wait and Run AutoUpdate Later. This will allow us to enter a local distribution point for faster updates. Then click Next.
You will get a dialog box stating that McAfee was successfully installed. Click Finish to continue.
Click on Start then Run and enter the information you see on the right. When the window appears with the list of files,  doubleclick on sdat????.exe

Once the software is installed you will want to configure it with your personal preferences. To get this window right click on the Virus Shield icon in the system tray and select Properties System Scan.

Under "What to Scan" Program files only is generally all you will need unless you suspect a new type of virus. The All Files choice takes a lot longer to scan your hard drive.
Click on the Action tab and selecting Clean infected files automatically is generally the best choice.
Clicking on the Report tab you can either enable or disable logging  of  virus activities.
Click on the Exclusion tab where you can add anything you want to exclude from being scanned.
Click on E-Mail Scan then the Detection tab you will want to check Enable Scanning of e-mail attachments. Choose Enable Corporate Mail and Microsoft Exchange (MAPI) for Outlook. Check Internet Mail for POP mail clients.
Under the Action tab enter what you want to happen when it detects a virus.
Click on the Download Scan icon then the Detection tab it is a good idea to check Enable Internet download scanning. It can slow down transfers somewhat.
Click on the Action tab and choose Delete infected files for "hands off" virus protection.
Click on the Internet Filter icon and check Enable Java & ActiveX filter.
Click on the Security icon. You can also password the ability to change your settings. I don’t usually bother with this! Leave the password protection off unless you are REALLY paranoid.

Next you will want to set up automatic scheduling for updates . Go to Start Programs then Network Associates then choose  VirusScan Console. You will get the following window.

Double Click on AutoUpdate.

You will get this window. Choose configure to tell it where to get the updates.

Click the Schedule tab to set up an automatic update time. Weekly at a random time is a good choice for an update.

Click on the Advanced tab and choose Update scanning engine if newer scanning engine exists.
Click on Update Sites. By default Network Associates is already in there. If you want faster access click Add then enter information for Topaz as seen below.
When you enter this data and click on OK you can select the order it will run the update in. Use your MSU domain account that has access to the Topaz\mcafee share because you may have this scheduled to run when you are logged off.
In this configuration Topaz will be tried first for an update. If it is not available it will go to the next in line. Network Associates will be slower but it will always have the latest .DAT file available. Then click Update now.
Wait while your scan engine and DAT files are updated.
Click OK to continue.
Because the scan engines are being automatically updated, there is no need to use AutoUpgrade. You will be notified by mail when a new version is available.
If you right click the virus icon in the system tray and choose About you will get information on the status of your software.
