The Role of Intercollegiate Athletics
Statement of Philosophy

June 1994

The role of Intercollegiate Athletics at MSU-Bozeman is to provide a competitive athletic program for men and women that is consistent and parallel with the University philosophy and total educational experience.

While the student should be given the opportunity to develop and excel in his or her athletic ability, we believe this effort should be supportive of and contribute to the primary goal of academic pursuits. Thus, the role of Intercollegiate Athletics is to encourage mutually supportive relationships between the athlete and academics.

Regardless of sex, race, creed, or national origin, equal and quality opportunity will be provided on an equitable basis for all students to compete in athletics based on their interests and abilities. Although program differences exist, decisions concerning programs will be made in an equitable manner.

Montana State University programs serve as a liaison between the University and the community, promoting pride in the University among the students, alumni, faculty, and citizens of Montana.
